David Cumbie

Originally from North Carolina, David has been the head of the sculpture department at Crealde School of the Arts since the early 80’s. He is a master technician with a strong background in mold making and casting. As an administrator, he has been responsible for many of the organized sculpture events in the Central Florida area, such as ‘Idea Art’ (1980-87), ‘Central Florida Sculptures’ (1995-96) and the current ‘Sculpture Gardens’ at Crealde. Cumbie is also well known for his many sculpture workshops.

Even though Cumbie has received many realistic commissions, his personal style is that of an assembler. He loves the childlike quality of toys (soldiers, stuffed animals, puzzle pieces), anything that is playful. Symbolic in nature, his art deals with the interaction between reality and humor. Historically oriented, his works have hidden references to artists of the past, while the sculptures for this exhibition have religious overtones relating to ‘Christ and the Cross.’
