Fashion Moda, South Bronx - 1984

Fashion Moda, South Bronx, New York, 1984

"Fashion Moda in the South Bronx was one of the most inventive exhibition spaces in New York during the 1980's. It was called the 'Graffiti Museum' and supported 'Graffiti Street Art' and the 'Hip Hop ' culture as much, if not more, than any institution ever.

After my street art activities of 1983, I was approached by the director of Fashion Moda to do an installed exhibition during the 1984 season. I painted all the walls black and did eight large murals, and included on 8 ft. by 12 ft. painting on massonite, entitled 'Waiting for Bad Jet'. Most of the works used either white spray paint, ('Bad Jet Wallpaper') or brushed-on house paint, ('Tank Behind Every Tree'). I did do one mural with yellow chalk entitled 'Sub Search'.

Four or Five days after the exhibition opened, three of the local graffiti artists, I believe Toxic was the instigator who had a key, came into the exhibition and tagged all the works. No problem, I came back the following day and redid all the works except the painting on massonite. The tags on the massonite were the only works that seemed to have any flair. For me, I enjoyed the fact that I was attacked."
