Murals on Lugano Lake, Milan, Italy
"While in Milan in 1998, I was approached
by a group that was planning a 10 day event on Lugano Lake at
Porlezza on the Swiss - Italian boarder. Since my return to the
states was set for the 15th of July, and the event started on the
16th, I went to Porlezza four day early. I had been told that the
event - "Tunnel 979 1/2" was on the side of a cliff beside
a lake, and that the surface of the cliff was covered with concrete.
Upon my arrival, I was surprised that the city had given the
coordinators of the event permission to paint on the cliff walls of
such a pristine view. In fact, I was asked to paint in a spot where
the murals could be seen both from the city and from the lake.
The first mural I painted was "Bad Jets as Wallpaper",
24 ft. high and 50 ft. long. I then painted three murals dealing
with Nuclear War. There were a lot of people coming by, and I was
asked a lot of questions about the meaning of the murals. One old
man in his 70's lived on the side of the lake in view of the murals,
and spent a lot of time watching and talking to me. When I got ready
to leave he told me he was honored to have my murals on his cliff."
