The Bird Sanctuary,
1991 Welded steel 96 x 108 inches

"I was educated as a sculptor, even though many people know me as a painter. Like Matesse, I really didn't start painting until I was 30 years old. I had made a series of waxes to be made into bronzes in 1978, and during the pouring all but two were lost. With nine months of work down the drain, I started painting.

Thirteen years later there was a sculpture competition in Central Florida, so I borrowed a set of torches and a welder from the auto body shop next door, and made "the Bird Sanctuary" and a car hood entitled "the Run of the Mullet". Both pieces were rejected from the exhibition, but eight years and several hundred pieces later I am still using the same borrowed torches and welder."
